Following the deliberations of an expert group the Department of the Environment has recently (October 2007) invited 'expressions of interest' in a tender to compile reports of varying detail on battlesites from the medieval and early modern period up to and including '98. The ultimate object is to identify sites, especially the more significant ones, with a view to giving them legislative protection. It is envisaged that the project will be complete by the end of 2008. This is good news for Aughrim Battle site.
